There has been an upswing recently of scam callers impersonating bank staff across Hong Kong. 🦹♂️ In this article, we will analyze the common techniques used by fraudsters and share five tips for identifying bogus calls to help you protect yourself from being scammed.
Common techniques used by fraudsters
A fraudster will pose as a staff member from a financial institution and invite you to apply for a loan or other banking services via phone calls or chat apps. Once a scam call or chat progresses, the fraudster will usually request sensitive personal information. 🔎👀

5 tips to identify a bogus call 🧐
To help you protect yourself, please find a list of tips below that could help you identify a bogus or scam call 💡:
• The caller refuses to disclose his or her identity and does not provide a callback number
• The caller or a pre-recorded message claims that there are irregularities with your bank account or ZA Card
• The caller does not disclose his or her name, staff ID, or which department he or she belongs to
• The caller focuses on trying to sell you loans or other banking services with a low interest rate
• The caller asks for sensitive information, such as your ZA login details or account number
What to do when you receive a bogus call 📱
As a leading Hong Kong virtual bank, most of ZA Bank’s services (including loans and balance enquiry) are enacted digitally through the ZA Bank App. If and when you suspect or realize that you have received a bogus call, here’s what you should do:
1. Hang up at once. 🔕
2. Change your login password or details immediately and contact our customer service team at 3665 3665 or via the ZA Bank App for assistance if you have revealed sensitive personal information. 🤐
3. Report the scam call to the police and inform them of the caller’s phone number and the information you provided. 👮
