Rubber Duck’s Origin

The Rubber Duck first made its debut in the Netherlands in 2007 and has since travelled to many locations around the world, including Hong Kong, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, Brazil, and the UK. Its adorable appearance while floating on water has captured the hearts of people worldwide, making it a beloved artwork.

The Rubber Duck is made up of over 200 PVC pieces, which have undergone a series of treatments to enhance durability and waterproofing. Its enormous size and vibrant yellow colour give the impression of an enlarged rubber duck toy. As the artwork is placed in different locations around the world, it creates a landscape that is both familiar and surreal.

The Rubber Duck features an electric fan inside that can inflate the artwork anytime, ensuring its shape is maintained under windy or rainy weather. In addition, the fan enables the Rubber Duck to float on water, the artwork's most prominent feature. Artist Hofman adjusts the Rubber Duck's size based on different exhibition locations and environments, making each displayed Rubber Duck unique.

Creative Concept Behind the Rubber Duck

Hofman often uses toy animals as models to create oversized public sculptures. The inspiration for the Rubber Duck came from his desire to interrupt people's daily routines and surprise them with a playful and nostalgic "Yellow Duck" toy that evokes fond childhood memories.

Hofman sees the Rubber Duck as a giant toy and himself as a giant baby who brings his toys to people all around the world. The Rubber Duck transcends borders and brings joy to people from all walks of life, which is the main reason for its immense popularity. His playful and whimsical approach to art has made the Rubber Duck a beloved artwork that has captured the hearts of people across the globe.

The Rubber Duck’s Arrival in Hong Kong: A 2013 Sensation

From May to June 2013, the Rubber Duck made a splash at Victoria Harbour and docked in the waters off Tsim Sha Tsui, attracting over 8 million visitors. Designed specifically for Hong Kong by Hofman, the Rubber Duck stood at a towering 16.5 meters, making it the world's second-largest rubber duck art installation at the time. Notably, the Rubber Duck's "spine" was manufactured at a local shipyard in Hong Kong.

The exhibition of the Rubber Duck in Hong Kong became a popular photo spot for both locals and tourists, bringing a light-hearted and joyful atmosphere to the city. At the same time, it also sparked public interest and appreciation for public art in Hong Kong. The Rubber Duck's presence in Victoria Harbour was a testament to the city's openness to creativity and innovation, as well as its ability to embrace art as a means of bringing people together.

Differences Between the Rubber Ducks in DOUBLE DUCKS and the 2013 Version? Q&A

Q: Why is DOUBLE DUCKS exhibiting two Rubber Ducks this time? 🐤 🐤

A: The inspiration for DOUBLE DUCKS came from the Chinese characters "囍" and "朋". The two Rubber Ducks will visit Hong Kong together, hoping to bring double the joy to the people of Hong Kong.
